New Forest National Park Boundary Markers

A photographic record of the wooden markers that trace the edge of the National Park. Made mostly from Douglas Fir in the shape of a stylised oak tree, they stand at the road and footpath entry points all around the perimeter.

This marker has changed in style recently – it was colour, but is now white, which I believe is the way most of the markers are going. Presumably this is for better visibility – shown here are both markers. The white version appeared in 2026. The placement of this marker flags up an interesting and contentious subject for locals. The field that can be seen across the road from the marker is (at the time of writing) being considered as ‘grey belt’ rather than green belt so that a housing developer can build 149 houses on it. This is literally a few feet from the National Park which would not, of course, be considered grey belt. Curious…
